Heather's Crown

The Heather's Crown is a circular ridge within Jartun, used by its people as a graveyard. It is named for the heather sage that reddens its summit.

Description

The Crown is a ring of raised ground. Heather sage covers the top in shades of red and purpling pink, and graves are set into it the whole way round. Seen from the country below, the headstones stand out along the ridge like the points of a crown, which is the accepted origin of the name.

From a distance, the Crown appears to shimmer. Local legend holds that the glints are jewels pushed up from the ground by the dead. Searched for up close, they are never found.

Significance

The dead are laid here for the beauty of the place, and so that they face out over the world below. Some read this as a symbol of ascent.

The heather sage is believed to protect the dead: to keep them from souring, and to bar whatever might trouble them at rest. The ground was planted as much for this as for its beauty.
